Die-hard Trekkers had a field day roasting this episode as one of the weakest in the show's second season, but it does address one important issue: if Voyager's quest for home could last up to 75 years, how will its crew deal with procreation and the raising of families? The question gains deeper importance when a swarm of space-faring creatures wreak havoc on Kes's Ocampan metabolism, prematurely accelerating her into a once-in-a-lifetime fertility period called the Elogium. Her mating drive thus aroused, Kes asks Neelix to father her child, leaving the Talaxian with a major decision, while Janeway and Chakotay determine that the swarming creatures have somehow drawn Voyager into their own peculiar mating ritual! So, while "Elogium" is a somewhat silly episode with too much sex on its brain, its basic premise is handled intelligently, allowing for some deep discussions about child-rearing, crewmember "discretion," and the painful separation of families caused by Voyager's remoteness in the Delta Quadrant. Jennifer Lien does fine (and even funny) work here as Kes, and a final scene between Janeway and a pregnant crewmember makes it clear that life, one way or another, will continue as Voyager's fate remains uncertain. --Jeff Shannon
